Hi, James here. New website with a new URL, but your old bookmarks should work fine too. Update later in the month as usual. Some great bonus material up on Patreon, and as a special treat we’re releasing this month's writer’s commentary to everyone. As usual, there is new unvaulted patreon content too. If you are even a little interested in the writer and artist commentary check it out. It is very fun to do, so I hope it's fun to read. So, new website. Big changes! Brand new content editor on the HICU's end, and a brand new front end for all of you. Means that we can do some cooler website stuff, quicker and easier. For example: you see that little gear icon in the bottom corner of a comic page? Go ahead, click it. I won't spoil the surprise here, but you'll see what I mean. That's the type of cool website functionality we'd like to start adding on a frequent basis.

"How frequent", you may ask? Well, with the new website, we're also testing out a new channel for user feedback. We're introducing a new website roadmap to give insight into those feature development timelines. And hey look, you can submit ideas for new features! Technology is amazing.

Not much else to report for now. As usual if you have a question or concern I will try my best to get back to you in the usual places. Have a good one.

“And how many fucking times have you tried calling this guy?” Logan asked Ellie who looked far too tired for it to only be Monday. 

“Three on Thursday, ten on Friday, and so far sixteen today.” He checked his watch, it was only 11am. 

“You sure he’s not dead?” The woman shook her head, sitting up straighter as she pulled her computer close. Logan came around to her side, watching as she typed away. A website he knew his daughter used to post memes and ‘shit-posts dad, it’s a hellsite’ came up. She logged in and second later had another account up. 

“He’s been blogging all night. Memes, pokemon fanart, some boobs on his private account. This is his main where fans sometimes send questions and he sometimes answers them. That question there.” She pointed to a question. ‘Why don’t you get off your lazy ass and reply to your goddamn editor’. “I asked him that at 2am.  

Logan scratched at his scruff as he read the reply. ‘My dear dear Ellie, suck my dick. I’ll send you the next chapter once I’m done.’

“And that’s the only communication he’s given you? When the hell is his book due?” He lent back. Ellie turned in her seat and shook her head at him. 

“No. I sent him another question and he made a post about authors needing time to see their babies grow or some shit. That’s the last I heard from him, but he reblogged a cat playing in snow about a minute ago.” She was back on her laptop, refreshing the page. “And some fanart for his series.”

“Hm.” Logan grunted looking over the screen once more. Deadpool, real name Wade Wilson was a handful. That’s how he went through six editors in two years. Ellie was at her wits end and had called in Logan to deal with him. Logan was the editor they called in as a last choice. He wasn’t afraid to barge into an author's house and harass them until they wrote. Charles, the owner of the publishing house, said to him that this guy might be his biggest task yet.  “And when is his book due?”

“Next monday. He has a week to get three chapters done, and for me to edit them. Charles wanted it half a month ago.”

“Got it. Pack up your laptop, we are going to give this little prick a visit.”

“Hey now, you’re an all star, something something, get paid.” A voice from the otherside of the door that the two editors stood at. Logan clenched his jaw as he knocked on the door. There was silence before a light patter of feet came to the door. Logan stood there with his arms crossed, Ellie just off to the side to not be seen by the author through the peephole. 

“Are you the dancer Dopinder got me for my birthday?” Came the voice on the other side of the door. Logan uncrossed his arms, and jutted out a hip. 

“Sure thing Bub. Open the door so we can get the party started, darlin���” The door was unlocked and thrown open with such speed it nearly got torn off its hinges. Logan didn’t waste another second, shouldering himself inside with Ellie on his heels. 

“What- Oh come on! You got me excited for nothing?” The man whine when he saw the woman enter. “What, did you get me this piece of eye candy in hopes to trade for the next chapter?”

Logan ignored the man as he looked around the room. Pizza boxes, random socks thrown on the floor, the dumbest looking dog he’d ever seen laying beside an open laptop. He moved towards the laptop and opened it up. 

“Chapter 23

What the actual fuck do I write here. They all died. The end.”

“Hey, that's private info that’s only supposed to be between me and the Xavier’s publishing house.” Wade had slapped the laptop out of Logan’s hands. It landed on the dog, who gave a disgruntled sniff and layed back down. 

“I am a fucking editor. He’s still working on chapter 23, what was the last chapter you got?” Ellie opened up her own laptop and was going through some documents. She looked a little less disheartened when she looked up again. 

“20.” Logan grabbed Wade by the shoulder and shoved him down beside the dog. With one hand holding him there, he bent down so they were face to face. He ignored the man’s pretty eyes as he spoke. 

“Here is what we are going to do Bub. You are going to give your editor those two chapters, then you and I are going to get the next few out. I don’t care if I have to tie you up and glue your hand’s to the fucking keyboard. You will start writing, and you will not stop until your fingers bleed. You are getting this done, today.” Wade looked from Logan to Ellie. 

“Where the hell did you find this guy? He’s going to get my dick hard, not get rid of my writer’s block.” Logan grabbed him, spun him around and pinned him on the floor, sitting on the man’s back. 

“I’m the editor they call when authors are being little shits.” Wade moaned into the floor and nodded. 

“Yeah, Okay. I can work with this. Sexy mafia boss business. Got a real bad boy air aboutcha ” 

“Send me the last two chapters Wade, and I can leave you two to… all this.” She waved a hand at them. Logan sat the computer in front of Wade, still sitting on his back. The man quickly sent the editor the last two chapters. He then opened his own document. 

“Chapter 23.

Write here about MC getting his fucking back blown out by some mafia boss-editor person.”

How to Back up a Tumblr Blog

This will be a long post.

Big thank you to @afairmaiden for doing so much of the legwork on this topic. Some of these instructions are copied from her verbatim.

Now, we all know that tumblr has an export function that theoretially allows you to export the contents of your blog. However, this function has several problems including no progress bar (such that it appears to hang for 30+ hours) and when you do finally download the gargantuan file, the blog posts cannot be browsed in any way resembling the original blog structure, searched by tag, etc.

What we found is a tool built for website archiving/mirroring called httrack. Obviously this is a big project when considering a large tumblr blog, but there are some ways to help keep it manageable. Details under the cut.

How to download your blog with HTTrack:

You will need:

A reliable computer and a good internet connection.

Time and space. For around 40,000 posts, expect 48 hours and 40GB. 6000 posts ≈ 10 hours, 12GB. If possible, test this on a small blog before jumping into a major project. There is an option to stop and continue an interrupted download later, but this may or may not actually resume where it left off. Keep in mind that Tumblr is a highly dynamic website with things changing all the time (notes, icons, pages being updated with every post, etc).

A custom theme. It doesn't have to be pretty, but it does need to be functional. That said, there are a few things you may want to make sure are in your theme before starting to archive:

the drop down meatball menu on posts with the date they were posted

tags visible on your theme, visible from your blog's main page

no icon images on posts/notes (They may be small, but keep in mind there are thousands of them, so if nothing else, they'll take up time. Instructions on how to exclude them below.)

Limitations: This will not save your liked or private posts, or messages. Poll results also may not show up.

What to expect from HTTrack:

HTTrack will mirror your blog locally by creating a series of linked HTML files that you can browse with your browser even if tumblr were to entirely go down. The link structure mimics the site structure, so you should be able to browse your own blog as if you had typed in the url of your custom theme into the browser. Some elements may not appear or load, and much of the following instructions are dedicated to making sure that you download the right images without downloading too many unnecessary images.

There will be a fair bit of redundancy as it will save:

individual posts pages for all your tags, such as tagged/me etc (If you tend to write a lot in your tags, you may want to save time and space by skipping this option. Instructions below.)

the day folder (if you have the meatball menu)

regular blog pages (page/1 etc)

How it works: HTTrack will be going through your url and saving the contents of every sub directory. In your file explorer this will look like a series of nested folders.

How to Start

Download and run HTTrack.

In your file directory, create an overarching folder for the project in some drive with a lot of space.

Start a new project. Select this folder in HTTrack as the save location for your project. Name your project.

For the url, enter https://[blogname].tumblr.com. Without the https:// you'll get a robots.txt error and it won't save anything.

Settings:

Open settings. Under "scan rules":

Check the box for filetypes .gif etc. Make sure the box for .zip etc. is unchecked. Check the box for .mov etc.

Under "limits":

Change the max speed to between 100,000 - 250,000. The reason this needs to be limited is because you could accidentally DDOS the website you are downloading. Do not DDOS tumblr.

Change the link limit to maybe 200,000-300,000 for a cutoff on a large blog, according to @afairmaiden. This limit is to prevent you from accidentally having a project that goes on infinitely due to redundancy or due to getting misdirected and suddenly trying to download the entirety of wikipedia.

Go through the other tabs. Check the box that says "Get HTML first". Uncheck "find every link". Uncheck "get linked non-html files". If you don't want to download literally the entire internet. Check "save all items in cache as well as HTML". Check "disconnect when finished".

Go back to Scan Rules.

There will be a large text box. In this box we place a sort of blacklist and whitelist for filetypes.

Paste the following text into that box.

Optional:

-*/tagged/* (if you don't want to save pages for all your tags.)

-*/s64x64u*.jpg -*tumblr_*_64.jpg -*avatar_*_64.jpg -*/s16x16u*.jpg -*tumblr_*_16*.jpg -*avatar_*_16.jpg -*/s64x64u*.gif -*tumblr_*_64.gif -*avatar_*_64.gif -*/s16x16u*.gif -*tumblr_*_16.gif -*avatar_*_16.gif

This will prevent the downloading of icons/avatars, which tend to be extremely redundant as each image downloads a separate time for each appearance.

Many icons are in .pnj format and therefore won't download unless you add the extension (+*.pnj), so you may be able to whitelist the URLs for your and your friends' icons. (Honestly, editing your theme to remove icons from your notes may be the simpler solution here.)

You should now be ready to start.

Make sure your computer doesn't overheat during the extremely long download process.

Pages tend to be among the last things to save. If you have infinite scroll on, your first page (index.html) may not have a link to page 2, but your pages will be in the folder.

Shortly after your pages are done, you may see the link progress start over. This may be to check that everything is complete. At this point, it should be safe to click cancel if you want to stop, but you run the risk of more stuff being missing. You will need to wait a few minutes for pending transfers to be competed.

Once you're done, you'll want to check for: Files without an extension.

Start with your pages folder, sort items by file type, and look for ones that are simply listed as "file" rather than HTML. Add the appropriate extension (in this case, .html) and check to see if it works. (This may cause links to this page to appear broken.)

Next, sort by file size and check for 0B files. HTMLs will appear as a blank page. Delete these. Empty folders. View files as large icons to find these quickly.

If possible, make a backup copy of your project file and folder, especially if you have a fairly complete download and you want to update it.

Finally, turn off your computer and let it rest.

Notes on Knitting California by Nancy Bates

Hhhnnnnng. Just. Look at that cover. Is that not absolutely gorgeous???

Yeah, so I saw this book at a yarn show last fall, and it's the reason that I wanted to learn stranded color work in the first place. At the time, I had a pretty limited budget, so I bought yarn and trusted that the book would be waiting for me later.

And I found out last week that my library system had several copies of the book, so needless to say, I smashed that hold button like it was bubble wrap. And then the only reason I didn't speed on my way to pick it up today was 'cuz my neighbor drove. (We are errand buddies. I highly recommend having an errand buddy!)

Right, so while I do madly adore California poppies, that's not the pattern that made me lose my mind. It's this one.

So.... yah, I need to make that. But I gotta learn a new skill first. Also, my mom wants to make it (tho maybe by converting the chart to crochet??) so I need a copy for her.

So, anyway, I'm clearly mad for the colorwork patterns in this book, but there are a few patterns that are cabled instead. There are also a few colorwork patterns that have a smidge of cabling to create a texture that supports the vibe of each hat.

I also like how each pattern has a 2-3 page introduction about the significance of each landmark or natural phenomenon that inspired a pattern. I know a decent amount of the trivia in the book, but there were still a few bits here and there that were new to me.

So is the book going to be good for people who aren't California dreamin'? Yeah, I think so. Maybe not every single pattern, but some of the patterns inspired by nature are just lovely out of context.

Tired Webcomic Creator Noises

Gags … ah yes lets make art into mindless content spat out by Ai cos we've been literally killing creators with inhumane workloads to spit out as many episodes as possible for mindless consumption.

I make my comics with passion and love of the craft! I have a degree in Comics, I spent years...years learning, practising, experimenting, adapting. I recall the days where you may get a page a week, or a few at the start of the month back in the 2000s era of self hosted webcomics and smackjeeves. (Rant below)

I've had to learn how the whole scrolling format worked to adapt to where all the readers had gone to, having been taught the traditional print page formats. And now cos its suddenly a massive money maker for these few hosts and they've pushed creators to the brink with the sheer volume they want pumped out that of course they want to use AI.

But it will speed up colouring! I have multiple tools available by the software I use and made by the wonderful people who love creating that colouring isn't that much of a chore, Its my fav part honestly. And its also a job sector within comics, colourists are skilled artists and this is another way to trim the fat, to pocket more money and keep churning out the 5th millionth villainess story.

Yes I am in most views a tiny creator, I haven't even broken their 1000 sub goal to even try applying for ad rev in the near 5 ish years on webtoon. But what I make I love, I spend hours researching folklore, scripting, drafting the whole kabudle like many other creators. And other than the kind supporters on my Patreon and Ko-fi I don't make much from the hours, days, weeks I pour into what I make. But at least I know its made with my own hands. That its made with love as corny as that sounds.

Ai is creeping its tentacles into everything, now ethically trained ai tools to help smaller creators would be fine. Most creators already rely on 3d tools to speed up things like backgrounds for webcomics. But when we don't know what its trained on, and is marketed wholesale as something anyone can use to make "content" is where it gets insidious. I am all for anyone with the desire to create and tell a story to go out there and do so, whether a beginner or a master. Part of the joy of a long running webcomic is seeing the artist grow both artistically and literary. But with ai it will be all one homogenous style, a copy of what ever is the hot thing. We already have amazon stuffed to the teeth with ai generated books, videos, merch and more all to be sold in some get rich quick manner. (need I point at the Willy's Wonderland incident). Youtube videos being spat out by faceless accounts stealing and regurgitating content at the speed no human video making team can easily match without cutting out quality or fact checking.

It is tiring. Creatives as a whole are treated poorly for decades, and now with the rapid late stage capitalism, website /social media enshitification and the blind headlong rush into the next big money making thing (watches the nft crash). I can't deny Covid sped this up, as everyone was locked inside and turned to what we creators made for comfort. But that content eating boom, lead to more demand, faster output and tighter budgets. We are seeing journalists being cut, game designers in their thousands and recently Dreamworks cutting a bunch and pushing to make their Robot film come out sooner due to public demands.

Skilled creatives are being treated like disposable fast food restaurant employees. Used til they burn out, get injured and even die! And then are simply replaced.

I've never been a creator with huge ambitions to work at places like DC, Marvel or Top Cow. I simply wished to create and share stories with the world, to bring smiles, to create art that evokes emotions, inspires others to look around themselves and create too.

Art is for everyone. You just need to take that scary jump, there is a whole array of welcoming communities willing to teach and share. I wouldn't have improved so much without the kindness of the webcomic groups I've discovered and learnt from. Everyone is always learning, and there no shame in not knowing how to do a thing. Even I started with the cheesy how to draw books as a kid and made my own pokemon and digimon.

Don't let the world treat your art as content. It is "ART" as much as what's kept in the louvre is seen as art, so is that little stick man doodle on a postit.

So Try something new, try a new material, a new style.

And support the artists you enjoy, tip their Ko-Fi, pledge to their Patreon, buy a sticker or print. Share their posts and tell them what you love about what they make.

Due to dire financial circumstances, I am changing the way my Patreon works and how mods are released. I have updated all of the tiers with new benefits and changed the price of two tiers. The first is a mod I created after being stranded without climbing gear while on vacation at Mt. Komorobi while testing out my Adventure aspiration. The other new mod makes it so that you won’t feel like building/upgrading a Rocketship is equivalent to watching grass grow (it’s incredibly slow). I suppose you guys want my review of Instagram in proper English now, then? Y’know, folks…. I busted my dog-ass to learn English for my contributions to this blog. The LEAST you could do for me is go out and learn just a little bit of canine for my sake. But, okay humans, without further ado, here’s the expletive-laden top five reasons th3-0bjectivist left Instagram in GLORIOUS ENGLISH!

1- Instagrams’ UI/UX eats ass with bare hands. I’m a dog, folks. I like ass. I like ass A LOT. You know what I DON’T like!? Having my nose forcibly buried deep inside IG’s plastic, ugly, squarish, basic-bitch design sphincter. I mean, seriously, who came up with this design ethos!? Josef Mengele? Text that you have to squint to see!??? The fact that I have to click on things several times because your wonky-ass click-targets are so small you gotta break out a lens magnifier to see where the hell they begin and end!?? Reminders to follow blogs that you purposefully unfollowed months ago?? Fuck that noise! This isn’t a website, merely looking at Instagram is torture under Geneva statutes and I would seriously advise anyone out there reading this to avoid IG’s horrendous site design at ALL FUCKING COSTS! You’d think over time Instagram would get better at this shit! Nope!! Same bullshit on Instagram, somehow gets WORSE every year. EAT ME, IG!!!

2- Instagram is simply NOT a friendly place for artists anymore. Never really was! Looking to promote your art on our platform!? Too bad, bitch! Sit your ass down and watch the SHITTIEST of shitty videos that our algorithm prioritizes over promoting an actual resurgence of grass-roots American culture because we are desperately trying to keep up with TikTok. Great initiative, IG! Hey next year, why don’t you try to bring EVEN MORE shitty videos of white pre-teen girls trying to dance in sync with Lady Gaga classics! WOOF! WOOF with a burning, acidic bark you clueless dipshits!

3- There is no sense of community on Instagram. We sign on to Deviant Art, for the first full day we are inundated with messages from absolutely everyone that notices we’re new… and they welcome us to the community. We sign on to IG, everyone ignores our profile in unison. Why? Because community is NOT prioritized on Instagram, the INDIVIDUAL is. This is the primary reason why it’s so common to see selfies on IG that depict a veritable slideshow of a ‘perfect life’. We know the whole ‘perfect life’ shtick is an act, folks. Again, I’m a spaniel dog, and even I can recognize you shouldn’t be smiling that much in all your pics… that’s not natural! But then again, if it weren’t for the ’perfect life’ selfie and couples shot, why would Instagram even fucking exist in the first place? Am I right folks!?

4- Too many scammers on Instagram. It’s amazing how, every time we post a painting to IG, we get a message from another motherfucker who wants to purchase our art NFT! WOW! What a deal! So, let me get this straight… I sell my digital art to you at NO COST for our work, and I get… nothing in return! Fuckin’ nothing. No money. No digital rights. No citation for intellectual property. No respect. No nothing. Hey NFT scammers!! Here’s the deal from here on out. You want our art NFT!? We want 10,000 dollars, per piece, up front. We’ll give you our Zelle account, send us 10,000 dollars, up front. No more bullshit. Send us money, send us money now. You want the intellectual property to own!? We’ll trade it for cold, hard, dirty, fatass dollar bills!!! You pay, we provide. You could just buy the physical canvas art and do whatever you want with it afterward! We’ll ship the damn thing to you for a pittance. JUST GIVE US THE LITTLE BIT OF MONEY WE’RE ASKING FOR YOU PEDANTIC, CLUELESS, INTERNET NFT SCAMMER-BITCH!!!

5- Instagram is a property of Meta. Failbook sucks. Instafail sucks. Even Zuckerberg doesn’t have faith in his own properties, to the point where he has cashed out to the tune of hundreds of millions and is actively seeking to hide away, underground, once the economic shit hits the fan in the United States. What a stand-up guy! All of you who are on Facebook and Instagram might want to start jumping ship while it’s still first-and-fashionable to do so.

As bad as Tumblr can be sometimes, at least there’s a community here. At least we have something of a megaphone here. And yes, we have our beloved pornbots, but the artistic community here still has standards, which is why we push for tasteful nudes over full on penetration.
